This is an interesting specimen from Afghanistan. The Beryl crystal is 21mm tall and is half Aquamarine and half Heliodor. It has formed on top of the middle of a Pink Feldspar crystal that is 188mm long and 12mm wide. Both are encrusted within a Lepidolite sandwich and mica matrix. It was obtained for Rocks and Things in Afghanistan by Lawrence Handicrafts. Aquamarine is a blue/green variety of Beryl that forms in hexagonal columns. Heliodor is the yellow gemstone form of Beryl.
The Aquamarine crystal is terminated with a pretty blue and transparent tip. Its formation appears to have been triggered by the Lepidolite growth. The original Heliodor crystal self-healed after this interruption and continued forming at a slightly tipped angle as Aquamarine, finishing in a termination. This makes an extraordinary crystal even more powerful.
