Transformation
This Zipper Oyster half is the partial fossilised remains of a bi-valve shellfish animal. The animal lived inside its two shells.
It is supposed that the zig-zag pattern of the opening between the two shells helped prevent sand from entering the shell and damaging its soft organs and body. It lived like modern day oysters in shallow coastal waters. Like oysters also, it was a filter feeder, extracting food particles from the sea water washing through its opening. They lived in the Late Cretaceous period, 160 - 66 million-years-ago.
