This Watermelon Tourmaline, Elbaite and Mica cluster 42*31*26mm weighs 156ct or 31.5g. It is a natural cluster from Afghanistan. It was obtained there for Rocks and Things Store by our partner, Lawrence Handicrafts.

On this cluster there is an Elbaite crystal that is 6mm wide and protrudes about 5mm from the matrix. It has a pale pink core and a green tinged fringe. There are numerous smaller Elbaite crystals, mostly green too. These and the matrix are all strongly UV reactive. There is also a clear 10mm non-UV reactive crystal that is probably Quartz, possibly Topaz. 

Blue, Green and Pink Tourmalines are striking members of the Elbaite mineral family. Elbaite is an igneous mineral that almost always forms in granite pegmatites. It is a complex lithium-rich borosilicate mineral. Elbaite can be any colour of the rainbow, and crystals can be multi-coloured. Pink Tourmaline is part of the colourful Elbaite group in the Tourmaline family. Other types include Indicolite (blue to blue/green), Verdelite (green), and Watermelon (pink with green). It is commonly formed within massive Quartz. Elbaite is UV reactive.
