Transition
This Trilobite Ordovician fossil is the preserved remains of a creature that lived in the Ocean about 450 million years ago. It is large at 47mm wide, 24mm deep and 76mm long. It weighs 93g.
Trilobites were a group of marine arachnomorph arthropods now long extinct. They were hard-shelled, segmented creatures. They lived from 570 million to 250 million years ago. Their first appearance in the fossil record defines the beginning of the Early Cambrian period.
The trilobites were among the most successful of all early animals. Trilobites reproduced sexually. They moulted their hard shell when their body grew too large and underwent a series of life stages. They lived in a variety of marine environments during their existence and flourished in the world’s oceans throughout the lower Palaeozoic era. There was then a lengthy decline to extinction in the Devonian, when nearly all the Trilobite orders died out. The last Trilobites disappeared in the mass extinction at the end of the Permian, about 250 million years ago.
